On 1.5.13 I was told my dad didn’t have long left to live. There’s no way to comprehend the words you’re hearing when someone tells you that and I didn’t know what to feel. All I knew was that things would get more difficult before getting better.
On Monday, 13.5.13, my dad passed away. After watching my dad be so strong after three years of being ill he no longer has to fight or put on a brave face, which he did so well. I still don’t know what to feel and can not bare the thought of not being able to say ‘Dad’ to him again, or hear him call me Melly or see him again. There will be a constant void for the rest of my life where he should be but just as I did when he was still here, everything I do will be to make him proud. And he will be with me wherever I go.
My dad was such an incredible man and anyone who met him or knew him would say the same, I know that for sure and that makes me feel so lucky to have been able to call him my dad and to know he had such an impact on so many people’s lives. He knew he was loved so much by those closest to him and he brought out the best in us.
To everyone who has been there for my dad, family and me through the hardest time of our lives, as well as over the years when he has been ill previously, I really cannot express how thankful I am for you being there. This has been a shock for all of us but the kindness and support you have shown is overwhelming and I will never be able to thank you enough. From the bottom of my heart. Cuddle your loved ones extra tight tonight.
His funeral will be held on Monday 20th at 1:30 at St. Bede’s chapel, Teesside Crematorium.
I know I’m not alone going through this- other people have had to go through the same awful situation and unfortunately more people will have to in the future but I want to help. On 30th June I will be running in the Race For Life in aid of Cancer Research UK with my sister and Olivia Parry who also lost a parent to this awful disease. Please, do your bit and together we will beat cancer.
